The ManGroove is a thoughtfully designed wellness space nestled in the lush environment of Surin, Phuket. It is a community-centered sanctuary where people can gather, learn, and take a break, all while promoting sustainability, health, and wellness. The project seamlessly integrates architecture, landscape, and interior design to foster a deep connection with nature and encourage reflection.
The journey begins at the Moon Entrance, symbolizing the circular flow of energy, leading visitors through an educational path adorned with interactive didactic signage. This immersive experience educates visitors about the project’s sustainable ethos and provides insights into eco-friendly practices. Along the way, visitors can engage with staff to learn more about the innovative techniques behind the construction and the importance of environmental stewardship. The space is designed to bring people together, while fostering a sense of community, well-being, and environmental awareness.
Sustainability lies at the heart of The ManGroove, with the use of eco-friendly materials like bamboo, reclaimed wood, and rammed earth. The project follows sustainable practices such as recycling, composting, and harnessing renewable energy sources, emphasizing the ethos of “Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle.” The design aims to create a harmonious balance between architecture and the surrounding environment, with organic forms and sacred geometry influencing the aesthetic.
The Mangrove Walk is a signature feature of the landscape, with rustic walkways made from reclaimed railroad ties that guide visitors through a peaceful mangrove ecosystem. Educational signage highlights the unique flora and fauna, fostering conservation and a deeper appreciation for the environment. Visitors can also explore the Edible Garden, where they’ll learn about local herbs, spices, and permaculture techniques, promoting sustainable living and wellness.
Inspired by the natural beauty of local herbs and spices, the color palette is an earthy blend of browns, terracottas, and greens, which harmonizes with the surroundings. This choice not only evokes a sense of grounding and balance but also creates a visual connection with the landscape.
The restaurant building is designed with organic forms, featuring curved rammed earth walls inspired by sacred geometry. These walls serve as barriers for the exterior while opening the space to frame stunning views of the lagoon through beautiful bamboo arches.
As part of the project’s educational mission, two different bamboo structural systems are showcased. At the restaurant, a combination of bamboo posts and Beam Structure combined with rammed earth walls highlight one system. In contrast, the Yoga Sala demonstrates a more intricate bamboo gridshell structure combined with split bamboo arches. This approach highlights the versatility of bamboo and promotes sustainable construction techniques.
The Octagon Sala is a key feature, exploring the sacred geometry of the octagon and its connection to yoga. The octagon symbolizes unity between the physical and spiritual worlds, enhancing spiritual connection and energy balance. At the heart of the sala is an eight-petal lotus flower, represented by a skylight and terrazzo floor pattern. This timeless symbol of enlightenment and rebirth merges sacred geometry with deep spiritual meaning, inviting contemplation on life’s cyclical nature, growth, and transformation.
The structure itself is a marvel of bamboo engineering, with eight bamboo split arches converging at a steel ring connector that forms the base of the skylight. Above, eight slanted double arches connect to the central ring. The entire structure is completed with a bamboo gridshell, creating an elegant yet sturdy space for yoga and meditation.
The ManGroove stands as a model of sustainability, community engagement, and spiritual well-being, offering a unique, immersive experience that fosters both personal and environmental growth.
